Shirley Holmes, a bisexual trans woman with a gift in the science of deduction (and has a consulting job working for CaptainGeorgia Lestrade, a homoromantic asexual woman who runs the homocide division at the NYPD), and is in need of a roommate to counteract the high cost of living in her luxury New York home happens upon Joan Watson, a lesbian woman recently home from her leave as an army doctor in Afghanistan. When Joan goes to the police department to argue with an officer about an unfair parking citation, Shirley spots Joan instantly and takes a natural liking to her. Having seen her potential and realizing Joan is living out of her ‘88 Subaru, Shirley offers her a room in her apartment as long as Joan looks for a job. She finds one as a physician in a local hospital, but is often pulled away from that work to assist Shirley on a variety of strange and gruesome murders and mysteries around town, for which they receive very little pay and even smaller praise.
Along the way, they meet Mary Morstan, a pansexual woman looking for help when the police wouldn’t take her case involving her father’s stolen pearls seriously, looks to Shirley and Joan. After the mystery is solved, Joan and Mary are left alone at dinner and end up hitting it off so well that Mary becomes a regular in their lives as Joan’s long-term girlfriend.
